We’re thrilled to welcome Maria Archangelo, a long-time leader of high-performing revenue, fundraising, sales, and membership teams for news organizations, as our first chief revenue officer. At Open Campus, Maria joins our executive team and will lead our efforts to grow and diversify our revenue.

Maria comes to us from Chalkbeat, one of the fastest-growing nonprofit news organizations in the country, where she was vice president of partnerships. During her three years there, Chalkbeat revenues increased by 74 percent. Chalkbeat, like Open Campus, focuses on in-depth reporting in local markets, building bureaus to cover education in cities across the country.

Before Chalkbeat, Maria oversaw editorial, fundraising, operations, and marketing for the Philadelphia Public School Notebook, a nonprofit news organization. She’s held a series of media leadership roles in her career, including at the Stowe Reporter/Waterbury Record and the Rutland Herald/Times Argus, both in Vermont, and at The Baltimore Sun Media Group. She’s a graduate of Temple University and lives in Philadelphia.

“I have admired the energy and innovation that Scott and Sara have shown at Open Campus,” Maria said. “I am delighted to join their team and help make their ambitious vision for Open Campus and stronger higher education reporting across the country a reality.”

“Maria is the ideal person to help lead Open Campus into our next phase,” said Scott Smallwood, co-founder and editor-in-chief of Open Campus. “She brings a dedication to journalism, a belief in our collaborative model for public-policy reporting, and deep expertise about how to raise the revenue needed to power nonprofit news.”
