We’re excited to welcome Naomi Harris as part of our first cohort of national reporters. She’ll be covering the role of higher education in our nation’s racial divides, writing in-depth stories, publishing a regular newsletter, and collaborating on projects with our Local Network of higher education reporters.

Naomi’s been part of our Open Campus Local Network for the past year, covering higher education in Pittsburgh for PublicSource, one of our partner newsrooms. In that role, she established a track record of elevating the voices and experiences of people who have often been overlooked in coverage about college. Previously, she covered education for The Capital Gazette, in Annapolis, where she focused on systemic racial and socioeconomic inequities in the school system.

“Knowledge is crucial for success, and for many people, pursuing postsecondary education is a step toward a good life. But that vision of success is marred with systemic flaws based upon harmful issues like white supremacy, racism, and discrimination,” Naomi said. In this role, she wants to probe how people can change the course and rewrite a path of success that is equal and just. “I’m incredibly excited and honored to work with Open Campus in this new position, and I hope to bring my love for learning and understanding others around me to the racial equity in higher education beat.”
